Policy Details

When a dean, director or department head identifies a position for which principal designation is required, a Request for Principal Designation form is completed and submitted to the appropriate vice president. The form must be accompanied by a job description. The appropriate vice president determines if the position meets the requirements of principal designation.

If the request is approved by the appropriate vice president, the request form is forwarded to Human Resources for review. Human Resources reviews the request and job description. Human Resources retains the request form and responds in writing to the requesting department, indicating approval or non-approval.

If the request is approved by Human Resources, the hiring department indicates the change to principal designation by submitting a Human Resources Action Form for an existing Emory employee or an Employment Information Form for a newly hired employee.

The authorization of prinicpal status cannot be done outside of Human resources and this process described herein. Principal status should not be communicated or commited to an applicant or staff until approved through this process.

Definitions

In order to be designated a principal employee, the position should be at a senior level approved by either the Board of Trustees or Emory’s President.

Board approved principals include: President of the University — the chief executive and administrative officer of the University, elected by, responsible to and reporting directly to the Board of Trustees; the executive vice presidents, vice presidents and other administrative officers holding positions established by the President; deans appointed by the Board of Trustees or its Executive Committee or associate deans and assistant deans of a school or college appointed by the President or his/her designee.

Presidentially approved principals: have principal responsibility for the direction and accomplishments of an organizational unit, including the development and implementation of policy, supervision of staff and budget responsibility; or are responsible for the development and implementation of a teaching, research or service program, and the representation of the program to internal and external constituents; and generally require specialized knowledge, extensive related experience (at least five years) and academic preparation (at least at the master’s degree level). Supervisory or management responsibilities alone do not justify principal designation.
